SB-2, SI-2 & AI-2 |
These units are designed as intraperitoneal implantation in snakes and lizards. When fitted with a temperature sensor, the pulse rate is adjusted to accommodate the wide body temperature range of poikilotherms. For other applications the pulse rate can be set to measure narrower temperature ranges. These units can also be configured for use in waterfowl and mammals.
Frequency Range: 138 to 235 MHz.
Transmitter: SB-2: Crystal controlled two-stage design, pulsed by
a multivibrator.
SI-2 & AI-2: Crystal controlled two-stage design, pulsed by
a CMOS multivibrator.
Pulse Width & Rate: SB-2: Pulse width 20-22 ms, pulse rate nominal 0.67 p/s (40 p/m).
SI-2: Pulse width 22-24 ms, pulse rate nominal 0.7 p/s (42 p/m).
AI-2: Pulse width 25-30 ms, pulse rate nominal 0.7 p/s (42 p/m).

Power Output: Set to use available battery power over the required transmitter life.
Housing: The battery and transmitter are hermetically sealed in a brass case. A small groove is added to the unit to allow for suturing during implantation. To prevent tissue reactions, the case is coated with multiple layers of a biologically inert butyl rubber compound. For subcutaneous placement, asymmetrically tapered ends are added, increasing the length by 5mm at each end.
Antenna: Finely stranded stainless steel cable, covered with a clear Teflon coating. Clear silicone tubing reinforces the base.
Activation: Removing an external magnet starts the transmitter. Replacing it stops the transmitter.
Mortality (suffix "M"): AI-2 only. After a nominal delay of 12 hours the pulse rate increases from a nominal ~42 p/m to ~75 p/m. After the mortality mode has been triggered, any motion resets the transmitter to the normal pulse rate. This option adds ~0.5g to the finished weight of each transmitter.
